Matthew Ernest Carver was born in 1899 at Hyson and was the son of Robert a hosiery bleacher and Florence Carver née Sheeran of 5 Kirkstead Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham His father Robert was born in 1876 at Bulwell and his mother Florence Sheeran was born in 1879 at Nottingham, they were married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Matthew Ernest b1899, Robert Edward b1901 and Frederick Henry Carver b1909 all were born in Hyson Green. In the 1911 census the family at 17 Terrace Street Hyson Green Nottingham and were shown as Robert Carver 35 yrs a hosiery bleacher, he is living with his wife Florence 32 yrs and their children, Matthew Ernest 12 yrs a school and news boy, Robert Edward 10 yrs a scholar, Frederick Henry 2 yrs of age, also living with them is Albert Sheeran 19 yrs a shoe finisher, he is a brother in law.
Private Matthew Ernest Carver, enlisted at Nottingham, he intially served with the service number 116550 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was serving with the 9th Battalion Essex Regiment, when he was killed in action on 13th October 1918. He is buried in Douai British Cemetery, Cuinchy, France.
In memoriam published 13th October 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- CARVER. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. M. E. Carver, Essex Regt., who fell in action October 13th, 1918.
