Family History

Arthur Waplington was born in 1883 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Alfred Waplington a hawker and the late Mary Waplington née Owen of 5 Cambridge Street, Nottingham. His father Alfred was born in 1851 at Nottingham, he died in 1916 aged 65 yrs, his mother Mary Owen was born in 1851 also at Nottingham, she died in 1889 aged 38 yrs, they were married on 6th October 1873 at St Mary’s church Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood. His siblings were Alfred b1879, Herbert b1882, Ada b1885 and Florence b1889. In the 1911 census his widowed father Alfred was living at 5 Cambridge Street, Nottingham, he is shown as 60 yrs a hawker he is living with his daughter Florrie 22 yrs a lace hand.

Military History

Arthur Waplington enlisted at Nottingham and joined the battalion on Gallipoli Thursday, 14 November 1915. He served in Egypt from January to June 1916, when the battalion moved to France and the Arras front. In August they moved to the Somme in preparation for the Battle of Thiepval 26/29th September. The battalion attacked from Constance trench and successfully took all of its objectives but at a high cost. Arthur was one of the men killed and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. John Morse
