He was the son of Joseph and Jane Hayes and the brother of Mary Jane, Frederick, Sarah Elizabeth, Ethel, Clara, Harold and John Joseph Hayes. In 1911 they lived on Columbia Street Huthwaite and later at 46 Frederick Street Sutton in Ashfield (both Nottinghamshire).
