John Joseph Beardall was born in 1885 at Alfreton, Derbyshire. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Beardall, née Heap of Greenhill Lane, Alfreton, Derbyshire. Thomas was born in 1862 at Alfreton, Mary Maria Heap was born in 1864 also at Alfreton, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. John Joseph married Charlotte Amy Stone (born 6th February 1889) on 25th June 1910 at the Riddings, Derbyshire, they lived at 6 New Marlborough Road, Kirkby in Ashfield, they went on to have 3 children, Evelyn born 9th March 1911, Gladys May born 12th March 1913 and Phyllis Nellie born 10th January 1915. In the 1911 census John Joseph and his family are living at Mount Pleasant, Riddings, John Joseph is 26 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wwife Amy 22 yrs and their daughter Evelyn 1 month old. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Greenhill Lane, Alfreton, Thomas 49 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary 47 yrs and 5 of their children. Commencing 7th December 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week. His widow later re married to William Warriner a coal miner.
Private John Joseph Beardall enlisted on 13th May 1904 at Ripley, Derbyshire. He served in Strait Settlement (Malaya) from 3rd November 1904 to 29th January 1907. He was qualified as a stretcher bearer 7th March 1905. Mobilised for war on 5th August 1914 at Derby, He went to France 19th September 1914 he was transferred to the 174th Field Coy Royal Engineers.and died from the effects of gas poisoning 16th May 1915. He is buried at Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 10. Row J. Grave 5.
