William Moore was born in 1877 at Bedworth, Warwickshire and was the son of Benjamin and Harriet Moore and the husband of Hannah Moore of 25 Brickyard Road Butler's Hill Hucknall Torkard. William married his wife Hannah Richardson (born 29th April 1880 at Blackwell) on 8th August 1898 at Basford Registrar office, they went on to have the following children, Eliza b1899, Selina born 10th July 1900 and Clara born 17th November 1906. they lived at 30 West Terrace, West Street, Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 62 Bentinck Street, Hucknall and are shown as William 34 yrs a coal miner stall man, he is living with his wife Hannah 31 yrs and their children Eliza 12 yrs a scholar, Selina 10 yrs scholar and Clara 4 yrs. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 28th May 1917.
Private William Moore enlisted on 8th May 1915 at Hucknall, he gave his age as 37 yrs and 240 days, he was living at 30 West Terrace, West Street, Hucknall and he was a coal miner, his next of kin was his wife Hannah of the same address. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 6th March 1916 he was wounded on 5th August 1916 a gun shot wound to his left cheek. He was admitted to the 1st casualty clearing station, and treated for his wounds and re joined his battalion on 20th August 1916. He went missing in action on 3rd September 1916 and later presumed killed in action on that date. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
