He was the son of William and Mary Blanchard and the brother of Thomas, Benjamin, Fanny and Arthur Blanchard. In 1901 they lived at 12 Angrave Street Bluebell Hill Road St Ann's Nottingham. Henry Blanchard later lived at 112 St Stephen's Road Sneinton Nottingham. In 1911 Henry was boarding at Goldthorpe Bolton upon Dearne near Rotherham.
1st Bn Blanchard had previously served in the 4th Derbyshire Militia. ('15 years ago' according to his Attestation). He attested in 2/9/14 at Wath on Dearne standing 5'5" tall and weighing 141 lbs. He was posted 18/3/1915, was admitted to hospital at Rouen with bronchitis 28/3/1915, returned to his unit in the field 26/4/1915 and went missing 8/5/1915. He had a poor disciplinary record but his offences were minor and punished with varying terms of CB (Confined to Barracks). For being absent from parade he lost a Lance Corporal stripe awarded 17/9/1914.
He was born A/M/J/1881 so may have been 34 when killed. It is possible that although living and working in Nottingham Blanchard returned to South Yorkshire to enlist with friends made during his time working in the Wath area around 1911.
