He was married to Elizabeth E (Smith). The contact address for his widow was given on the medal roll as Victoria Laundry, 187 Sherwood Street, Nottingham. Elizabeth was his sole legatee; there is no record of any children on the Register of Soldiers' Effects.
He served in France from 25 February 1915. He was reported missing on 22 October 1918 but his relatives did not get confirmation of his death until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel Reference:7). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

My husband Private Ernest Smith, 11th Sherwood Foresters, late 1/7th Sherwood Foresters, missing October 22nd 1918, now reported killed. Wife.
