He was the son of John and Emma Oliver. In 1901 they were living at 9 Leather Street, Nottingham, in the ecclesiastical parish of St Phillip. Three children were in the household the night of the census; Frank (5), Thomas (2) and Gertrude E. (7 months). The family has not been traced on the 1911 census although a Frank Oliver, age 15, is listed as an inmate in a Nottingham institution which appears to be a home for children although Frank was not listed as either a 'scholar' or having a trade. The notice of his death gives his address was given as 2 Crossland Place, Nottingham.
He served in France from 18 May 1915 and was killed in action two years later. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Panel Reference: Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
He has been identified from the details in the notice of his death and the members of his family named in the Register of Soldiers' Effects. Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 18 May 1917: ‘Private J Oliver, Sherwood Foresters, 2 Crossland Place, (-), killed October 26th.’ Register of Soldiers' Effects: modest payments were made to his mother, Emma, sister, Gertrude, and brothers Frank and Thomas.
