George Kent was born in 1897 in Nottingham and was the son of George, a grocer, and the late Charlotte Louisa Kent née Smith of 43 Carter Gate, Nottingham. His father George was born in 1874 in Warwickshire and his mother Charlotte Louisa Smith was born in 1874 in Basford. They were married in 1894, the marriage was registered in the Basford registration district. They went on to have 6 children, sadly one was to die in infancy. Their surviving children, all born in Nottingham, were:- Charlotte b1894, Martha b1895, George b1897, Harry b1899 and William b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 43 Carter Gate, Nottingham, and are shown as George 37 yrs a grocer who is living with his wife Charlotte 37 yrs who is assisting in her husband’s business, and their children, Charlotte 17 yrs tailoring at Snook’s wholesale warehouse, Martha 16 yrs tailoring at Snook’s wholesale warehouse, George 14 yrs a sorter at Nottingham telephone company, Harry 12 yrs a scholar and William 8 yrs a scholar. His mother Charlotte Kent died in 1913 in Nottingham, she was 40 yrs of age. His brother Harry also served in the war.
Rifleman George Kent enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 4th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 12th May 1915 and within days was reported missing in action. His death was not confirmed until May the following year when he was presumed killed in action on 25th May 1915. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) memorial, Ypres, Belgium (Panels 51 & 53).
In memoriam published 2nd May 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KENT. – Reported missing May 25th, 1915, now officially killed in action, Rifleman George Kent, K.R.R.C., 43, Carter-gate, aged 19 years. A noble life, a noble death; in the midstof life we are in death. – From his loving father, sisters, and brothers.” In memoriam published 24th May 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KENT. – In loving memory of Rifleman G. Kent, killed in action May 24th, 1915, eldest son of George and the late Mrs. Kent.
