John Charles Rawlings was born on 26th February 1882 at Braunston, Rutland, he was the son of the late John William Rawlings an agricultural labourer and the late Harriette Rawlings née Godwin of Braunston, Rutland.

His father John William was born in 1852 at Braunston, he died in 1910 in Rutland he was 58 yrs old , his mother Harriette Goodwin was born in 1852 at Braunston, she died in 1888 at Oakham, she was 36 yrs of age, they were married in 1873 at Braunston, they had 5 children.

He was the younger brother of Samuel Rawlings of 49 Humber Road Beeston Nottingham.

In the 1911 census John Carles is living at Braunston with his brother Frederick Rawlings, John Charles 2 7yrs is awaggoner on a farm, his brother Frederick Rawlings is 27 yrs of age andis a farm labourer.

Military history

Private John Charles Rawlings enlisted at Oakham, Rutland,on 21st November 1914 giving his address as Braunston, Oakham, he was 32 yrs and 9 months old, he was an agricultural labourer his parents were both deceased, he served with the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he landed in France on 29th July 1915. He was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 having no known grave his name is commorated on the Arras Memorial
