Family History

He was the husband of Sarah Ellen Smith (née Morgan), whom he had married in 1905 (registered Oct/Nov/Dec), and the father of Mary Lily, Ada May, Nellie and Walter Smith. In 1911 Walter and Sarah and their three daughters, Mary Lily (5), Ada May (3) and Nelly (4 months) lived at 14 Bell Street, Carlton, Nottingham. They also had a lodger, Florence Ann Racliffe (26). Their son, Walter, was born the following year (birth registered Apr/May/Jun 1912).

Military History

He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and face 7B). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 24 July 1916: ‘Smith. Killed in action July 1st, Corporal Walter Smith, South Staffordshire, aged 33. Wife and children.’ Soldiers' Effects: his widow, Sarah, was his sole legatee and she received payments for herself and their children.
