George William was born in 1898 in Sneinton and was youngest son of Charles King a timekeeper and Eliza King nee Streets,and they lived 48 Lyndhurst Road, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham His father Charles King, was born in 1851 in Nottingham, working as a time keeper. and his mother: Eliza Streets, was born in 1852 in Nottingham, they were married in 1870 in Radford and went on to have 11 children , sadly four of whom died in infancy or childhood before 1911 their surviving children all born in Nottingham were Bertie James b1876, Mable Florence b1881, Frank b1885, Ernest b1887, Daisy b1889, Miriam Nellie b1892 and William Geoirge b1897 In the 1911 census the family are living at 48 Lyndhurst Road, Sneinton Dale, and are shown as Charles 60 yrs a time keeper , head of the family he is living with his wife Eliza 59 yrs and their children, Frank 26 yrs a Great Northern Railway porter, Ernest Arthur, 24 yrs a carmens for the Great Northern Railway, Miriam Nelly, 18 yrs a curtain knitter and William George 13 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal George William King, enlisted at Derby and initially served with service number 45899 in the Sherwod Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire ) Regiment. He transferred to the 59th Company Machine Gun Corps, He was killed in action on 21st March 1918. and he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. On 21st March 1918 the German army launched Operation Michael and smashed through the British front. Machine gunners were frequently used during that day to hold off advances as the infantry tried to moved back. King was killed in action on that day, but his body was never recovered.
