Family History

Henry Johnson was born in 1891 at Sutton in Ashfield he was the son of Joseph a labourer and Mary Johnson née Lee of Skeby Forest, near Mansfield. Joseph was born in 1857 at Stoneyhoughton, Mary Lee was born in 1868 at Bolsover, married on 1st November 1885 at Bolsover they went on to have 9 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Skegy Forest near Mansfield, Joseph 54 yrs is a labourer, he is living with his wife Mary 45 yrs and 6 of their children, Henry 20 yrs is a coal miner. Henry Johnson married Rebecca Hemstock (born 31st December 1895) on 10th May 1913 at the Sutton in Ashfield Parish Church, they lived at 134 Dalestorth Street, Sutton in Ashfield, they had the following children, Leonard born 24th December 1913, Henry born 21st March 1915 and Lily born 9th August 1917. Commencing 14th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shilings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Henry Johnson enlisted on 31st August 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 23 yrs and 327 days he was a coal miner, he was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment and landed in France on 29th July 1915, he served with the 3rd battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was wound (a gun shot wound to his right arm) on 14th July 1916 and returned to England on 20th July 1916 for treatment. He returned to France on 5th April 1917 and posted to the 1st battalion. He was killed in action on 19th September 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-E- Artois Memorial, France.
