Family History

John William (junior) was born in 1884 at Carlton and was the son of John Williams (senior) and his first wife the late Mary Ellen Ruscoe of 2, Cromwell St., Carlton, Nottingham. His father John (senior) was born in 1854 at Bangor, his mother Mary Ellen Ruscoe was born in Drayton, Shropshire in 1854 she died in 1894 at Nottingham she was 40 yrs of age, they had the following children, William b1876, George b1879, Thomas b1881, John b1884, Sam b1887 and Sarah Jane b1891 all were born in Carlton. His father went on to marry his second wife Mary Jane Southwood (born 1862 Welby Warren, Lincolnshire) in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Cromwell Street, Carlton, Nottingham and are shown as John Williams 56 yrs an engine fitter, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 49 yrs and his children, Sarah Jane 20 yrs a lace dresser and Emily 13 yrs a doffer at cotton mill.

Military History

Private John Williams enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Carlton, Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 15th September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
