Family History

Arthur was the son of George Frederick and Sarah Jane Little nee Attenborough. George Frederick Little was born in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, in 1861 (A/M/J Bingham), and Sarah Jane Attenborough was born on 4 May 1865, also in Bingham. They were married in 1883 (O/N/D Nottingham) and had ten children: Minnie b. 9 November 1887 (J/A/S Bingham), Elsie Edna b. 2 April 1891 (A/M/J Basford), Harold Attenborough b. 30 September 1892 (O/N/D Basford), Dorothy Agnes b. 6 July 1894 (J/A/S Basford), Evelyn May b. 22 August 1896 (O/N/D Basford), Arthur Eric b. 1898 (J/A/S Basford), Gladys Annie b. 14 July 1900 (J/A/S Basford), Edith Mary b. 21 April 1906 (A/M/J Basford), Margaret Phyllis b. 1 February 1908 and Olive Irene b. 8 May 1909 (A/M/J Basford. With the exception of Minnie who was born in Bingham all their children were born in Netherfield. In 1891 Frederick (29), a barber, his wife Sarah (25) and their first child, Minnie, were living at 35 Victoria Road, Netherfield. By 1901 they had moved to 92 Victoria Road, Netherfield, where Frederick (39) was working as a hairdresser on his own account from home. Also in the household on the night of the census were his wife and their seven children: Minnie (13), Elsie (10), Harold (8), Dorothy (6), Evelyn (4), Arthur (2) and Gladys (8 months). By 1911 the family was living at 80 Victoria Road, Netherfield. George Frederick (49) was now described as a hairdresser and newsagent on his own account. All ten children were living at home: Minnie (23) a draper's assistant, Elsie (20) a GPO telegraph clerk, Harold (18) a hairdresser's assistant, Dorothy (16) a blouse hand, Evelyn (14) who was described as 'at home' so probably helping in the house or business, Arthur (12) and Gladys (10) who were at school and the youngest children Edith (4), Margaret (3) and Olive (1). The family home was still at 80 Victoria Road when Arthur attested in 1916 and in 1918 when Arthur's personal possessions were returned to his parents. George Frederick Little died in 1939 (Mar Basford) age 77. At the time of the 1939 England and Wales Register his widow and six of their daughters were living at 8 Gedling Road, Carlton, while their surviving son, Harold, was married and living at 80 Victoria Road. Harold was a master hairdresser and presumably carrying on his father's business. Sarah Jane Little died in 1955 (Sep Basford) age 90. Of Arthur's siblings: Minnie was living with her widowed mother at 8 Gedling Road, Carlton, in 1939; she was employed as a shop assistant (corsetiere). Minnie died in 1974 (Dec Basford) age 86. Elsie Edna was living with her widowed mother at 8 Gedling Road, Carlton, in 1939; she was employed as a Post Office clerk telegraphist. Elsie has not yet been traced after 1939. Harold Attenborough married Hannah Britton (b. 18 September 1896) in 1926 (J/A/S Basford) and in 1939 they were living at 80 Victoria Road, Netherfield; Harold was described as a master hairdresser. Harold died on 23 November 1974; the Probate record gave his address as 95 Victoria Road, Netherfield. His wife Hannah predeceased him (1969). Dorothy Agnes was living with her widowed mother at 8 Gedling Road, Carlton, in 1939; she was employed as an underwear machinist. Dorothy died in 1968 (Mar Basford) age 73. Evelyn May was living with her widowed mother at 8 Gedling Road, Carlton, in 1939; she was employed as a shop assistant in a stationery shop. Evelyn died in 1973 (Dec Nottingham) age 77. Gladys Annie married George C Tyler in 1929 (J/F/M Basford). In 1939 they were living at 142 Trent Boulevard, West Bridgford, Nottingham. George (b. 28 February 1903) was an inspector in the Post Office [GPO] Engineering Department. Gladys died on 2 July 1981 (Sep Nottingham) age 81; the probate record gave her address as 68 Rodney Road, West Bridgford. Edith Mary was living with her widowed mother at 8 Gedling Road, Carlton, in 1939; her occupation was given as 'unpaid domestic duties'. Edith has not yet been traced after 1939. Margaret Phyllis was living with her widowed mother at 8 Gedling Road, Carlton, in 1939; she was employed as a clerk typist (cotton doublers). Margaret married Wilfred Bird in 1942 (A/M/J Basford) and died in 1991 (Mar Norwich) age 83. Olive Irene married Ernest E White in 1938 (J/A/S Basford) and died in 1987 (Oct South-east Hampshire) age 78.

Military History

Arthur attested in 1916 at the age of 17 years and 361 days. He was posted to the Derbyshire Yeomanry (service number initially 79633) but was transferred to the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters although by September 1917 he was serving with the 10th Battalion. He served at home from 29 June 1916 to 12 September 1917 then with the BEF (France) from 13 September 1917 until his death the following year, a total of 1 year 297 days. Arthur was killed in action n 21 April 1918 and is buried in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme (grave ref. I.K.30). Arthur's father was contacted by the Imperial War Graves Commission to ask if a personal inscription was to be added to his son's headstone, but the Commission did not receive a reply. He was eligible for the Victory Medal and British War Medal.

Nottingham Evening Post, ‘Roll of Honour’, 30 April 1918: ‘Little. Killed in action, April 21st, Pte. Arthur Eric Little, aged 19, Sherwood Foresters, the dearly loved son of Mr and Mrs GF Little, Netherfield, Notts.’ (www.britishewspaperarchive.co.uk) Registers of Soldiers' Effects: his father, George Frederick Little, was his legatee. His personal possessions were returned to his parents in September 1918; these included a wallet, a religious book and leaflet, cards and photographs. November 2018: Information has been received by the Project of a memorial to Arthur which was retrieved by a member of the public from a skip when a Presbyterian Church on Forester Street, Netherfield, was demolished. The inscription on the memorial reads, 'In memory of Bro. AE Little, Sherwood Foresters. Fell in action in France April 21st 1918 aged 19. For liberty and honour.’ The custodian has transferred the memorial to St George's church, Netherfield, for display.
