Family History

John Edward Burton was born in 1896 he was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Emily Burton née Strawbridge of 13 Second Avenue Forest Town. Thomas was born in 1870 at Hucknall, Emily Strawbridge was born in 1870 at Torquay, Devon, they were married in in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 13 Second Avenue, Forest Town, Thomas 41 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Emily 41 yrs and their 6 children including John Edward 15 yrs a coal miner.

Military History

Private John Edward Burton, enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Forest Town and served with the 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers. He landed in France on 8th June 1915 and was killed in action on 25th September 1915. He is commemorated on Loos Memorial.
