Family History

Arthur Whatmore was born in 1894 and was the son of Walter a coal miner contractor and Lucy Whatmore née Goodhall of Mansfield Road, Eastwood. His father was born in 1871 at Harby, Nottinghamshire and his mother Lucy Anne Goodhall was born in 1873 at Eastwood, they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. They had a further son William Henry b1900 in Eastwood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Mansfield Road, Eastwood and are shown as Walter 40 yrs a miner/contractor he is living with his wife Lucy 38 yrs and their children, Arthur 17 yrs a coal miner and William Henry 11 yrs. Arthur married Lucy Annie Goodall (born 12th February 1898 ) in 1916 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 8 Scargill Street, Eastwood they had the following children, Eva Norah born 20th March 1917 and Eliizabeth Ann born 28th November 1918. Commencing 14th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week. His widow later lived at 572 Vernon Road, Basford, Nottingham

Military History

Private Arthur Whatmore He was combed out during the Spring of 1918 and served only two weeks at the front with 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment.(see letter) He was killed in action on 11th September 1918 he is buried at Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, Nord .
