Family History

Frederick Wilfred Hicks was born in 1891 the son of Arthur Charles a wheelwright & Smith and Maud Hicks née Gilbert of Scopwick Lincolnshire. Arthur Charles was born in 1868 at Metheringham, Lincolnshire, Maude Gilbert was born in 1869 at Newmarket , Lincolnshire, married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Sleaford registration district, they had 14 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. Frederick married Annie Smith on 28th April 1912 at Marple Bridge at Glossop, they went on to have a son Wilfred born 3rd October 1913 , they lived at 15 Cedar Road, Sherwood Rise Nottingham. Commencing 31st December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week rising to 28 shillings and 4 pence a week on 6th July 1918.

Military History

Gunner Frederick Wilfred Hicks was called up for service on 1st September 1916 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 26 yrs and 16 days, he stated he was a grocery manager. He was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery and served with the 1st Army Pool. He embarked from Southampton on 30th December 1916 and disembarked the following day at Le Harve. He was killed in action on 28th April 1917 and is buried at La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast
