Family History

George was born in 1893 in Basford and was the son of Thomas a lace maker and Adeline Jones of 18 Rosetta Road, Basford, Nottingham. An older brother, Harry, died in February 1910 aged 19. His father Thomas died 18 February 1945 aged 79 years and his mother Adeline on 16 August 1949 aged 83 years.

Military History

George Jones enlisted in Nottingham and landed in France on 29th July 1915. He was killed in action on 27 September 1916 and is buried in Bancourt British Cemetery (grave ref. VI.F.10).

Personal inscription, CWGC headstone: 'Greater love hath no man than this.' Inscription, family headstone, Basford Cemetery, Nottingham: 'In loving memory of Harry the beloved son of Thomas and Adeline Jones who died Febry (-) 1910 aged 19 years. Sleep on beloved sleep, and take thy rest, Lay down thy head upon thy saviour’s breast We loved thee well, but Jesus loves thee best. Goodnight! Goodnight! Goodnight! Also Private George Jones killed in action in France, Sept 27th 1916. Aged 23 years. The Supreme Sacrifice. Interred British Cemetery, Bapaune. Also the above named Thomas Jones, who died Feby 18th 1945, aged 79 years. Also in loving memory of Adeline, beloved wife of the above Thomas Jones, who died Augt. 16th 1949, aged 83 years.' In memoriam published 27th September 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “JONES. – In loving memory of Private George Jones, Leicestershire Regiment, killed in action September 27th, 1916.
