George Franklin

George Franklin was born in Derby, birth registered 1884 (J/F/M), the son of George Pettit and Maria Franklin (née Tristram). His father George Pettit was born in Willington, Derbyshire, in 1852, the son of James Franklin, and worked as a blacksmith; he died in 1914. His mother Maria was born in Derby in 1852, the daughter of Thomas Tristram. George and Maria, both 20 years old, were married on 2nd November 1872 in the parish of Derby St Alkmund and had seven children. George jnr. married Maud Marina Baldwin (b. 1884, Derby), the daughter of Thomas Albert Baldwin, on 24th December 1902 at St Thomas Church, Derby. Both were 20 years old; George's occupation was painter and he was living at 279 Harrington Street, Derby. George and Maud had three children, all born in Derby; Maud Marina born 1903 (died 1911), George Peter born 16 November 1905 and Stanley James born 20 June 1908. George's wife Maud died in 1909 and at the time of the 1911 census he and their three children, Maud (7), George (5) and Stanley (2), were living at 11 Back Parker Street, Derby, with his parents. His daughgter Maud died later that year aged 8 (O/N/D Derby). George married secondly Gertrude Emily Waldram (born 28th March 1882). They were married in 1913 in the parish of Derby St Augustine and lived at 6 Bailey Street, Old Basford. Following his death in 1916 his widow Gertrude was awarded a pension of 21 shillings a week, the first payment was made on 18th December 1916. Gertrude Franklin was living on Seaton Crescent, Nottingham, in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled. She died in 1968 (O/N/D Nottingham). George's eldest son, George Pettit, married Edith E Lenglet (b. 23 November 1909) in 1936 (O/N/D Nottingham) and in 1939 they were living on Perry Road, Nottingham. George was a grocer assistant manager. He died in 1988 (O/N/D Rushcliffe). The youngest son, Stanley James, married Margaret Robinson (b. 14 March 1913) in 1931 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1939 they were living on Nuthall Road, Nottingham; Stanley was an automatic tool setter. Also in the household was Sarah E Shepherdson (b. 19 July 1866) a widow. The records of two other members of the household remain closed but they may have been Stanley and Margaret's children as there are records of the births of Stanley G Franklin in 1933 (J/F/M Nottingham, mother's maiden name Robinson) and Pauline C Franklin b. 1936 (J/F/M Nottingham, Robinson). There may have been another son, Stuart, b. 1940 (J/F/M Nottingham, Robinson). Stanley James died in 1986 (A/M/J Nottingham).
