George Brain was born in 1883 at Banbury, he was the son of the late John Brain a general labourer and Sarah Brain née Evans. His father was born in 1854 at Coventry he died in 1897 he was 43 yrs old, his mother Sarah Evans was born in 1855 at Banbury, they were married on 25th December 1877 at St Marys Church, Banbury, they went on to have the following children, William Henry b1878 Lambeth, their remaining children were all born in Banbury and were John b1880, George b1883, Harry Edward b1885, Edith b1889 and Albert Edward b1891. George married Sarah Jane Bilton (born 29th June 1882 at Kelham) in 1905 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have the following children, John Leslie born 12th September 1906, Florence Elizabeth born 1st June 1908, George William born 24th December 1909 and Herbert Edward born 22nd May 1918. In the 1911 census the family were living at Tollerton village and were shown as George 28 yrs an under gardener, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 28 yrs and their children John Leslie 4 yrs, Florence Elizabeth 2 yrs and George William 1 yr of age. Following his death his widow Sarah Jane was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 21st October 1918.
Corporal George Brain enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Tollerton, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 22nd March 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 7
