Family History

He was the son of Mary Ann Earp and the brother of Annie, Gertrude, Thomas, Violet, Fred and Margaret Osborne. He was the husband of Hilda Annie (née Croft) Osborne (married 31/5/1916) who 26/3/1917 was granted a weekly pension of 11/-.

Military History

John joined the army reserves on 9th November 1914 at Liverpool giving his age as 24 years and 17 days and his religion as Church of England. He served with the 20th Battalion The King's Liverpool Regiment. He was promoted to Corporal 8/12/1914. He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 7th November 1915 and was promoted to Sergeant on 12/2/1916. He was killed in action 30/7/1916 at Guillemont, East of Trones Wood. His body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
