Family History

William James Herbert was born in 1895 the son of John a pit yard labourer and Mary Jane Herbert and the brother of Ray, Edwin, Percy, Bertha and Lillie Herbert. Both his parents were born in Hanslope, Buckinghamshire, John in 1859 and Mary Jane in 1861, married C1882 they went on to have 17 children, sadly 7 were to died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 they lived at Springfield Villa, Southwell Road Kirkby in Ashfield. William married Millicent Phillips (born 16th December 1894 ) in 1916 their marriage was registered in the Basford registration district, they lived 51 Spring Street, Hucknall, his widow later lived at 157 Woodborough Road Nottingham. Commencing 14th October 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Corporal William Herbert, enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 57th Battery, Royal Field Artillery, he died of wounds on 4th April 1918 and is buried in Picquingy British Cemetery on the Somme;
