He was the son of Richard and Eliza Hoffen and the brother of Agnes, Lily, Mabel, John and Harold Hoffen. They lived at 7 Bleasby Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.
Private Albert Edward Hoffen, served with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 12th April 1917. He is buried in Noeux-les-Mines Communal Cemetery,(grave ref l.R.22).
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 18 May 1917: 'Hoffen. Killed in action (-), Lance Corporal (sic) Albert Edward, age 20, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Richard Hoffen, 7 Bleasby Street, Sneinton. Mother, father, brothers, sisters.'
