William Herbert was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur an upholsterer and Sarah Annie Warwick née Keeling of 1 Gamble Street Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1858 in Nottingham and his mother Sarah Annie Keeling was born in 1855 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1878 in Nottingham and went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood their children listed in the 1891-1911 census were, Violet Ada b1881, Matthew John b1883, Arthur Albert b1883, Sarah Annie b1888, Ellen b1889, Thomas Keeling b1891, Florence Cissy b1892, William Herbert b1892 and Sydney Albert b1899, all the children were born in Nottingham In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Gamble Street, Radford, Nottingham and are shown as Athur 54 yrs an upholsterer, he is living with his wife Sarah Annie 55 yrs and their children, Arthur 28 yrs a widow and miner, Ellen 21 yrs a pattern girl/lace trade. Tom 20 yrs a painter, Cissy 10 yrs a pattern girl/lace trade, In the 1911 census William Herbert has left the family home and joined the Army he is shown as being 18 yrs of age a serving soldier , with the 4th Dragoon Guards, in barracks at Preston Military Barracks, Lewes Road, Preston, Brighton, His father Arthur died on 27th November 1918. His married sister, Violet Ada Osborne, died on 27th November 1918. She was the husband of Alfred Osborne.

Military History

Shoeing Smith William Herbert Warwick, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish). He landed in France on 16th August 1914. He died of wounds on 11th May 1915 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium
