Alick Bertam Sumner was born in 1895 at Hose and was the son of the late William a policeman and Eliza Sumner née Bennett of 148 Russell Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham. William was born in 1860 at Hose, he died in 1904 aged 44 yrs,Eliza Bennett was born in 1854 at Willoughby on the Wolds, they were married in 1877 at Nottingham, they had 4 children. In 1911 the family are living at 148 Russell Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham, Eliza 60 yrs and a widow is living with her children Alick B 31 yrs a gardener and Martin 28 yrs a brass & iron turner.

Military History

Gunner Alick Sumner enlisted at Nottingham, he served in 'B' Battery, 59th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action on 7th September 1916 he is buried in Bapaume Post Military Cemetery, Albert (grave ref. I.B.22).

Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 25 September 1916: 'Sumner. Killed in action September 7th, Gunner Alick Sumner, RFA, son of the late PC (sic) Sumner and Mrs Sumner, 148 Russell Road, Forest Fields. Mother, brothers, sister.'
