Family History

Leonard Sallis was born in 1881 the son of Thomas a lace maker and Ellen Sallis née Dudson 143 Noel Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. Thomas was born in 1855 at Basford, Ellen Dudson was born in 1856 at Nottingham, married in 1873 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 7 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents were living at 262 Radford Road, Hyson Green, Thomas 56 yrs is a lace maker. Leonard married Martha Middleton born 1882 in 1907 at Nottingham, they lived at 15 Radford Road , Hyson Green , they had two daughters, Marjorie b1909 and Winifred b1910. In 1911 Leonard was living at 391 Berridge Road, Hyson Green he is 30 yrs of age and an upholsterer, he is living with his wife Martha 28 yrs and his two daughters Marjorie 2 yrs and Winifred 10 months old.

Military History

Private Leonard Sallis, enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 232096 in the Army Service Corps. He was serving with the 13th Battalion London Regiment, when he was killed in action on 3rd August 1917. He is buried in Messines Ridge British Cemetery.(grave ref lll.C.15)
