Mark Ragsdale was born in 1877 at Bingham the son of George Henry a gas worker and Elizabeth Ragsdale née Smith of 9 Mann Street Hyson Green Nottingham. George Henry was born in 1856 at Bingham, Elizabeth Smith was born in 1858 at Stapleford, married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Charles William b1880 and Florence b1888. In 1911 his parents are living at 9 Mann Street, Hyson Green , George Henry is 55 yrs and a corporation gas worker, Mark married Lizzie Dilks (born 26th December 1879 Derbyshre) on 2nd June 1906 at Nottingham, they lived at 11 Noel Street, Derby. In 1911 they were living at 7 Cheltenham Street, Nottingham, Mark is 34 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Lizzie 31 yrs Commencing 6th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.
Corporal Mark Ragsdale originally enlisted on 3rd February 1899 at Birmingham, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 8 months, (born in 1877 he was actually 22 yrs ) he enlisted for 7 years service and 5 years in the reserves. Posted to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment he saw service in South Africa 1899-1902. He was mobilised for war on 5th August 1914 and served with his old regiment the Royal Warwickshires. He landed in France on 22nd October 1914, promoted to Lance Corp 17th March 1915 and to Corporal on 14th October 1915 he was killed in action on 12th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
