Family History

William McGowan was born in 1886 the son of Alexander a railway porter and Jeanie McGowan. Alexander was born in 1861 at Stoneykirk, Jeanie was born in 1860 at Lochwinnoch. (both in Scotland) William married Ethel Hoyland (born 11th October 1910) in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had a son Kenneth Alexander born 6th August 1915, they lived at 98 Noel Street, Hyson Green. In 1911 William is a boarder at 54 Talbot Road, Rickmansworth he is 26 yrs of age and a professional golfer, he is boarding with his wife Ethel 21 yrs at this address with Mary Kirkham 53 yrs. Commencing 26th May 1919 his widow Ethel was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military History

Private William McGowan enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 105824 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. H e was killed in action on 24th October 1918 and is buried at Cross Roads Cemetery Fontaine-Au-Bois
