Thomas Linford was born in 1888 the son of Charles a labourer and the late Mary Linford née North of 20 Cardwell Street, Hyson Green. Charles was born in 1842 at Buckinghamshire, Mary North was born in 1845 also at Buckingham, she died in 1906 at Nottingham aged 61 yrs they were married in 1863 in Buckinghamshire and went on to have 11 children. He married Selina Simmons (born 22nd December 1889) on 21st August 1909 at St Stephens Church, Nottingham, they had three children, William born 8th August 1913, Thomas 21st August 1914 and Charles born 20th May 1917. they lived at 7 Ashwell Street, Hyson Green. In 1911 the family all lived at 20 Cardwell Street Hyson Green Nottingham. Commencing 11th March 1918 his widow Selina was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week. Selina married Benjamin Holmes in 1920 and they lived at 18 Plimsoll Street Hyson Green.
Pte. Thomas Linford, enlisted on 26th May 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 26 yrs and 2 months he was a town labourer. He originally served with the 16th Battalion (Chatsworth Rifles), he was wounded – a rifle grenade wound to his head, resulting in the loss of most of one ear – on 28th May 1916. He later served with the 15th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, He was again wounded on 9th August 1916 a gun shot wound to the abdomen, he was admitted to a war hospital. On 20th June 1917 he was sentenced to 14 days' Field Punishment No. 1 for “Making an improper remark to an Officer" He was killed in action on 15th August 1917 and is buried in Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery.
In memoriam published 26th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “LINFORD. – In loving memory of Pte. Thomas Linford, killed in action August 25th, 1917.
