Frederick William Hickson was born in 1890 at Ilkeston and was the son of Edward a labourer and Eliza Hickson of 3 Brown Street Alfreton Road Nottingham. His father Edward was born in 1850 at Kimberley and his mother Eliza Hickson was born in 1851 at Wisbech, Cambridge they were married C1880 and had the following children, Albert b1881 Little Eaton, Derbyshire, Ernest b1883 Long Eaton, Derbyshire, Percy b1888 Kimberley and Frederick b1891 Ilkeston. In the 1911 census we find that Frederick had enlisted into the Army, he was living at Salamanca barracks at Aldershot, he was shown as being 21 yrs of age and a Private in the 1st battalion Est Yorkshire Regiment. In the same 1911 census his parents were living at 66 Landsdown Road, Sheffield and were shown as Edward 60 yrs a labourer he is living with his wife Eliza 59 yrs and their children, Albert 29 yrs married and a traction engine driver, his wofe Lydia Hickson 30 yrs and their daughter Dorothy Hickson 7 months old also living with them is their unmarried son Percy 22 yrs a traction engine driver.
Sergeant Frederick William Hickson enlisted at Sheffield , he served with the 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He landed in France on 8th September 1914 and was killed in action on 25th April 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
