Harry Bailey was born in 1886 in Hyson Green and was the son of James a general dealer and Elizabeth Bailey née Garner of 13 Selhurst Street Hyson Green Nottingham. His father James was born in 1848 and his mother Elizabeth Ann Garner was born in 1847, they were both born in Bury, Lancashire, they were married in 1884 and their marriage was recorded in the Manchester Registration District. They went on to have 6 children, sadly one was to die in infancy their surviving children were, Lillie b1878 Rochdale, Lancashire, Rowland b1880 Lincoln, Ada b1882 Nottingham, Harry b1886 Hyson Green and Florence May b1891 Hyson Green. His father James died in 1904 in Nottingham he was 57 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Selhurst Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and are shown as Elizabeth 64 yrs a widow and housekeeper. she is living with her children Lillie 33 yrs single and a dress maker, Harry 25 yrs a brass bobbin finisher and Flory May 20 yrs a blouse machinist.
Private Harry Bailey, enlisted on 9th September 1914 in Nottingham. He gave his age as 28 yrs and 71 days and his occupation as coach painter, his next of kin was his mother Elizabeth Bailey of 13 Selhurst Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. He was posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and joined them on 10th September 1914 at Winchester. Within 49 days on 27th October 1914 he was found to be medically unit to serve in the Army and was discharged under Kings Regulations paragraph 392. Later he served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment before transferring to 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 19th August 1916. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
