Family History

Harry Snowden was born in 1898 in Saxondale and was the son of Thomas a farm labourer and Harriett Snowden née Hayes of Peacock House Saxondale, Nottinghamshire. His father Thomas was born in 1866 in Saxondale and his mother Harriett Hayes was born in 1867 in Mnafield, they were married in 1887 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 9 children all of whom were born in Saxondale, Mary Ellen b1888, Harriett b1890, George b1893, Annie b1895,Harry b1898, Lucy Hilda b1900, Emma b1902, Charles Thomas b1908 and John Benjamin b1914. In the 1911 census the family are living at Peacock House, Saxondale and are shown as Thomas 45 yrs a farm labourer , he is living with his wife Harriett 44 yrs and their children George 18 yrs a farm labourer, Harry 13 yrs a scholar, Lucy Hilda 11 yrs a scholar, Emma 9 yrs a scholar and Charles Thomas 3 yrs.

Military History

Private Harry Snowden enlisted at Derby and initially served with service number 67240 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was later transferred to the 2/6th Gloucestershire Regiment. He died of wounds on 25th March 1918. He is buried at Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery, Bray-sur-Somme, grave reference 2.G.60
