Family History

George William Woodward was born in 1897 he was baptised on 26th September 1897 at St John's Church, Mansfield he was the son of Frederick a sewage worker and Martha Woodward née Mills of Recreation House, Recreation Ground, Pleasley Hill. Frederick was born in 1869 at Attercliffe, Yorkshire, Marthas Mills was born in 1873 at Fullwood, Lancashire, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they had a further child which died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Recreation House, Recreation Ground, Pleasley Hill, Frederick is 42 yrs a sewage worker, he is living with his wife Martha 38 yrs and their son George William 13 years of age.

Military History

Private George William Woodward enlisted at Mansfield, in September 1916, he served with 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 4th August 1917 and is buried at Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 3. Row B. Grave 31. Shown as William George on CWGC.

Extra Information

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser, 16/08/117: Only son of Mr F Woodward of Pleasley. Enlisted September 1916 had been severely wounded in the head on 02/08/1917. He never regained consciousness and died on 4/8/1917.
