Alonzo Marshall was born in 1894 in Basford and was the son of John a fitter and Annie Elizabeth Marshall, née Wardle they lived at 83 Egypt Road, New Basford, His father John was born in 1869 in Basford and his mother Annie Elizabeth Wardle was born in 1870 also in Basford, they were married in 1891 in Basford and went on to have 4 children all of whom were born in Basford , they were Lily b1892, Alonzo b1894, Grace Hannah b1896 and Hilda b1903. In the 1911 census the family were living at 83 Egypt Road, New Basford and were shown as John 42 yrs head of the family and a fitter, he was living with his wife Annie 41 yrs and their children, Lilly 19 yrs an office clerk, Alonzo 17 yrs a bakers carter, Grace Hannah 15 yrs an errand girl and Hilda 8 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Alonzo Marshall, enlisted in Nottingham on 17th August 1911, aged 18 yrs and 10 months he gave his occupation as that of a baker. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He saw service in India between 11th December 1912 and 2nd September 1914 when the battalion returned to England to prepare for their arrival on the Western Front. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 3rd November and the following day 4th November 1914 he landed in France, He died of wounds sustained whilst fighting at Neuve Chapelle at No. 13 General Hospital in France on 15th March 1915. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 15th March 1917 :- “MARSHALL. – In loving memory of L-Cpl.
