Harry Shipman was born in 1895 the son of George a slater and tiler and Elizabeth Shipman (née Green) of 53 Cremorne Street Meadows Nottingham. Harry’s father was born in 1859 in Grantham, his mother in 1861 at Kinoulton. Married in 1881 at Nottingham they had eight children - George b.1883, Mary b.1885, Amelia b.1887, Ann b.1890, Leonard b.1892, Harry b.1895, and Albert b.1902. In 1911, they lived at 4, Headon Terrace, Nottingham. Amelia was a curtain taper, Ann a tailoress, Leonard a slater and tiler and Albert 9 was at school. Also living at the address was Ann Green, 77 , Ellizabeth’s widowed mother in law.
Harry Shipman enlisted at Nottingham and buried in Neuvilly Communal Cemetery Extension.
His brother Driver George Shipman, 27th Divisional Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery, died of enteric fever on 28th January 1916 during his journey to Saloninka. Buried in Mazargues War Cemetery, Marseilles. In memoriam published 13th October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post: SHIPMAN. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Lance-Cpl. Harry Shipman, killed in action October 13th, 1918. Dearly loved, sadly missed by his loving mother and father, Albert. “SHIPMAN. – In loving memory of my dear brothers, Lance-Cpl.
