John Edwin Cripwell was born in 1894 in Nottingham Father: John Ernest Beaumont Cripwell, born in 1871 at Epperstone, Nottinghamshire, worked as a local relieving officer and later as an estate clerk Mother: Kezia Clayton Cripwell, née Brown born in 1871 in Nottingham. Brothers: Charles Harold, born in February 1901 and Tom Clayton Cripwell, born in 1910. Sisters: Edith Mary, born in 1897 and Dorothy, born in 1899. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family was sufficiently prosperous to employ a domestic servant. They lived at 7 Forest Grove, Nottingham (C. 1901) before moving to 7 Jubilee Street, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham (C. 1911). The CWGC record gives John's parents address as 9 Jubilee Street, Sneinton.
Private John Edwin (Jack) Cripwell, 5th Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry, was killed in action 6th January 1917. He is buried in Agny Military Cemetery.
Death notification published 18th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CRIPWELL. – Killed in action, January 6th, 1917, Private John E. Cripwell, Shropshire Light Infantry, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Cripwell, 9, Jubilee-street, Nottingham, in his 23rd year. Loved by all.” In memoriam published 5th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CRIPWELL. – In ever-loving memory of our dear son Jack, K.S.L.I., killed in action January 6th, 1917. Never a morning dawns or a night returns but what we think of thee. – Father and mother. “CRIPWELL. – In ever-loving memory of our dear brother Jacks, K.S.L.I., killed in action January 6th, 1917. Too dearly loved to be forgotten. – Edith, Dorothy, Harold, and Tom.” In memoriam published 6th January 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CRIPWELL. – In ever-loving memory of our dear son and brother Jack, killed in action January 6th, 1917.
