Father: William Clifton, born in 1861 at Greasley, Nottinghamshire and working as a stationary engine driver. Mother: Matilda Clifton, born in 1861 at Weymouth, Dorset. The family lived at 125 Colwick Road, Sneinton, Nottingham but later moved to 36 Pullman Road, Sneinton, Nottingham. Sydney Clifton had two brothers; Percy, born in 1888 and Louis Cecil, born in 1902. He also had two sisters; Ivy, born in 1886 and working as a warehouse clerk and Alice Maud, born in 1890 and working as a draper's shop assistant

Military History

Sydney William Clifton was a professional soldier who arrived in France on 02/10/1914 with the British Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action in 1917 and buried at Bully Grenay Communal Cemetery, British Extension.
