William Rosenbaum

William was born in 1886 (registered Apr/May/Jun); his first name is given as 'Wolfe' on the birth index and the 1901 census but 'William' on the 1911 census. The following entry was made in the baptismal register of Nottingham St Thomas' church by the vicar: 'Entry 1585: William Rose ne Rosenbaum (Hebrew). No. 71449 Notts & Derby. 20 August 1917 [19 August 1917], [burial] unknown, probably ‘somewhere in France’, about 30 years of age. 5 Mount Pleasant.' While the St Thomas register records his surname as 'Rose', which William might have adopted when he enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters, his surname on the memorial in the Nottingham synagogue is given as 'Rosenbaum' and members of his family continued to use their original surname. William was the son of Hyman Jack and Sarah Rosenbaum, both of whom had been born in Poland and were Russian nationals. Hyman was a tailor and carried on his own business in Nottingham. At the time of the 1911 census, Hyman and Sarah had been married for 28 years and had had ten children born alive of whom eight were still living. In 1901 they lived at 45 Kirkewhite Street, Meadows, with their seven children; Jane (17 b. Poland), Wolfe (William), Esther (13 b. London), Moses (Morris, 11, b. London), Mary (8, b. Nottingham), Solomon (5, b. Nottingham) and David (1, b. Nottingham). All the family were described as 'foreign subjects'. Also living in the household was Hyman's 61 year old father, Abraham, who had also been born in Poland and held Russian nationality. By 1911 Hyman (50) and Sarah (49) were living at 37 St James Street and all eight children were in the family home on the night of the census: William, Jane (Janie), Esther, Morris (married), Mary, Solomon, David and a fifth son, Harry (8, b. Nottingham). Abraham Rosenbaum was not recorded in the household. At least five of Hyman's children were helping in the family business: William (tailor) Jane (tailoress), Morris (tailor's presser), Mary (tailoress) and Solomon (errand boy). At the time of William's death the family was living at 5 Mount Pleasant, Nottingham. William's father died on 17 May 1927.
