Military History

Pte Leonard Ray Milner Worksop Guardian 30 March 1917 News of the death in action was received on Tuesday of Pte Leonard Ray Milner son of Mr Edgar Milner of Portland Street and formerly of Albert Street, Worksop. The War Office wrote to his father stating that he was killed on March 8th but no further details are to hand as to the circumstances. The deceased soldier was 24 years of age and enlisted about two years ago in the South Staffords. Previous to joining up he was employed at Messrs Oats Ltd., Station Saw Mills. He saw service in Egypt, but about twelve months ago was drafted to France where he took part on the heavy fighting on the Somme. Although he escaped being wounded, he suffered severely from trench feet and rheumatism through frequently being in water up to the waist. He was invalided to England and spent three months in hospital at Bradford. On recovery, he was again drafted to France and on taking part in the great advance was killed as stated. Private Milner was a typical soldier standing six feet high. He was well liked by many associates and very great sympathy is expressed with his father and mother and family in their bereavement. His only brother is a miner at Manton
