Family History

John was born in 1897 in Nottingham and was the son of William Henry a lace manufacturer and Mary Elizabeth Wolvin née Tatton of Clay Avenue, Moore Rd., Mapperley, Nottingham. William Henry was born in 1856 Mary Elizabeth Tatton was born in 1859 both were born in Nottingham, they were married in 1878 at Nottingham and had 6 children, 1 died in infancy or early childhood, they had children, Annie Elizabeth b1880, William Henry, b1887, Ernest b1898, Harold b1900 and Annie, Florence b1910 In the 1911 census the family are living at 41 Bobbersmill Road, Hyson Green, Nottingham , John is 14 years of age and is working as a billiard marker.

Military History

Private John Bernard Wolvin enlisted in Nottingham on 18th May 1914 giving his age as 17 yrs and 8 months he was a gate keeper at Gedling colliery and served with the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 28th February 1915 and was wounded in action on 16th October 1915 (a shell wound to his buttock) His injury caused him to be returned to England on 16th October 1915. Once recovered from his wound he returned to France on 13th August 1916 and was killed in action on 1st July 1917, his body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial.
