Family History

John Wright was born in 1875 in Hucknall and was the son of the late Thomas a labourer and Elizabeth Wright née Riley of 21 Linby Ave, Hucknall, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1845 in Hucknall and his mother Elizabeth Riley was born in 1850 in Hucknall, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 5 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Hucknall and were Samuel b1871, Rebbeca b1873, John b1875, Thomas b1885, Mary b1887, Millicent b1890 and George b1892. His father Thomas was to die in 1901 aged 66 yrs , his death was recorded in the Basford Registration District. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 Linby Ave, Hucknall and are shown as Elizabeth a widow 61 yrs, she is living with her children John 36 yrs a bricklayers labourer, Thomas 26 yrs a carter, Mary 24 yrs at home, Millicent 21 yrs a cigar maker and George 19 yrs a bricklayers labourer.

Military History

Pioneer John Wright enlisted at Westminster and served with the 4th Labour battalion, Royal Engineers, he landed in France on 26th August 1915 and died on 30th March 1916. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery grave reference VII D 87

Extra Information

His brother Private George Wright, enlisted at Derby on 20th March 1916 and served with the 7th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, he left for Mesopotamia on 4th September 1916 and was killed in action on 25th January 1917, he is buried in Amara War Cemetery,
