Matthew Harry Williams was born in 1888 in Nottingham and was the son of the late Matthew a coal miner and Ann Williams née Taylor of 6 Deptford Street, Bulwell. His father Matthew was born in 1854 in Atherstone, Warwickshire and his mother Ann Taylor was born in 1865 in Belstone, Staffordshire, they were married in 1885 in Atherstone and went on to have 8 children sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were John b1887, Matthew Harry b1888, Joseph b 1894 and Ernest b1900 all were born in Nottingham. His father Matthew died in 1905 in Nottingham he was 48 yrs of age. Matthew Harry married his wife Thirza Tasker in 1910, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District . In 1911 they lived at 6 Sylvester Street and are shown as Mathew Harry 24 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Thirza 20 yrs. Thirza later lived at 46 Byron Street (both Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire) In the same census his mother is living at 6 Deptford Street, Bulwell, she is shown as a widow 46 yrs she is living with her sons Joseph 18 yrs a colliery banksman and Ernest 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Rifleman Matthew Williams, served with the 4th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he died of wounds on 6th May 1915. He is buried in Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery.
