Family History

Grenville West was born Benjamin Grenville West in 1896 at Hucknall and was the son of George Henley West a coal miner and Mary Ann West néé Ottey of 1 Victoria Street, Hucknall. His father George Henley West was born in 1862 at Ashby, Leicestershire and his mother Mary Ann Ottey was born in 1860 at Ibstock, Leicestershire, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration area, they went on to have the following children, William Henry b1889, Thomas Sydney b1892, George Henley b1894, Benjamin Grenville b1896, Gladys May b1899 and Olive b1901, all were born in Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Victoria Street, Hucknall and are shown as George 47 yrs a coal miner. he is living with his wife Mary Ann 50 yrs and their children, William Henry 22 yrs a coal miner, Thomas Sydney 19 yrs a coal miner, George Henley 17 yrs a house painter, Benjamin Grenville 15 yrs a farm labourer, Gladys May 12 yrs a scholar and Oliver 1 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Grenville West enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 21st March 1917 and is buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery.
