William Charles was born in 1887 (birth registered Apr/May/June), the son of William and Mary Miller. In 1891 William (70, b. Nottingham), Mary (43 b. Alfreton), William Charles (4) and an older sister, Annie (20, b. Nottingham), were living at Foxhall House Lodge, Nottingham; William senior was a gardener. Information in army records indicates that Annie was William Charles' half-sister and the age difference between his parents, together with information on census returns that Annie was William's daughter, suggest that William Charles was the child of a second marriage. By 1901 the family was living at 266 Woodborough Road; his father was still working as a gardener. William Charles joined the army in 1906 and in 1911 was serving at Woolwich.
William Charles joined the army on 18 October 1906; in 1911 he was serving with 57th Bty RFA at Woolwich, London. He was attached to 43rd Bde at the time of his death. He was killed in action and is buried in Vendresse British Cemetery (grave ref I.D.13). He qualified for the 1914 Star and the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
According to army records, William Charles' legatees were his mother, half-sister Annie and nephews Arthur Grace and Walter Grace. A brother, Walter William, and a sister, Susan, were also mentioned although these relatives are not recorded in the family home on either the 1891 and 1901 census. Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 8 October 1914: 'Miller. Killed in action, BEF, William C Miller of 66 [?266] Woodborough Road, age 27, Gunner RFA.'
