He was the son of Edward Thomas and Elizabeth Lees and the brother of Gertrude Lees (later Groome). In 1911 they lived at The Old Rose Revived Bellar Gate and later at 98 Lees Hill Street Sneinton (both Nottingham).
Pte. Walter Bernard Lees, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 12/13th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 9th September 1915 joining the British Expeditionary Force. He died of pneumonia on 22nd November 1918 and is buried in Caudry British Cemetery.
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 22nd November 1919:- “LEES. – In loving memory of Pte. Walter Bernard Lees, late 12/13th Northumberland Fusiliers, died at Cambria, pneumonia, November 22nd, 1918. – Dad, mam, sister, brothers, late Lowdham. “LEES. – In sacred remembrance of Pte. W. B.
