Dola Blacknell was the illegitimate son Mary Jane Blacknell his birth was registered in 1894 in the Basford Registration District , he later became known as William Tudbury. His mother Mary Ann Blacknell was born in 1875 in Hucknall she married William Tudbury born 1874 in Hucknall and they married in 1896, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 10 children sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their children were all born in Hucknall and were Martha Elizabeth Tudbury b1896, Edna Tudbury b1900, John Tudbury b1903, Joseph Albert b1907, Sarah Tudbury b1910, Freda Tudbury b1912, Marjory Tudbury b19915 and William Tudbury b1920. In the 1911 census the family are living at 23, Orchard St., Hucknall, Nottingham and are shown as William Tudbury 37 yrs a general carter, he is living with his wife Mary Ann Tudbury 36 yrs and their children, Dola Blacknell 16yrs (marked as illegitimate son) a coal miner, Martha Elizabeth Tudbury 14 yrs, Edna Tudbury 10 yrs, John Tudbury 8 yrs Joseph Albert Tudbury 4 yrs and Sarah Tudbury 1 year
Private William Tudbury, enlisted at Arnold and served with the 8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 6th June 1915 and he died of “sickness” on 23rd June 1918. He is buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery.
Serving on the Western front since he arrived on the continent as a reinforcement to 1/8th Battalion on 6th June 1915, he was admitted to Bagthorpe Military Hospital on 25th May 1916 suffering from German measles.
