Family History

George Fisher was born in 1894 at Shelford and was the son of Joseph a farmer and Elizabeth Fisher née Melbourne of Sycamore Farm, Shelford. his father Joseph was born in 1860 at Shelford and his mother Elizabeth Melbourne was born in 1861 at Dembleby, Lincolnshire they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Sleaford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Emma b1885 Nottingham, Annie b1887 Nottingham, John Reuben b1889 Shelford, Alice b1891 Shelford, Mabel b1893 Shelford, George b1894 Shelford, Sarah Elizabeth 1896 Shelford, and Lucy Caroline b1902 Shelford. In the 1911 census the family are living at Shelford village and are shown as Joseph 51 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children, Emma 26 yrs a dairy worker, Annie 24 yrs a domestic cook, Reuben 22 yrs a wheelwright, George 17 yrs a farm labourer, Sarah Elizabeth 15 yrs a scholar and Lucy Caroline 9 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private George Fisher enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Shelford, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He served with the battalion in Gallipoli and Egypt and fought on the Somme in 1916 and Messines in June 1917. He was wounded on 5th October 1917 during the battalion's successful attack on Poelcappelle, Belgium and died from his wounds the following day. He is buried at Dozingham Military Cemetery, grave VIII.I.16 Source John Morse

Extra Information

Dozinghem was one of the Casualty Clearing Stations set up for the battle of 3rd Ypres. Dozinghem, Mendinghem and Bandagehem - Hem is Flemish for village, so 'dosing, mending and bandage village' were the Tommies humorous names given to these three.
