Stephen Smith was born in 1878 in Hucknall and was the son of Stephen a coal miner and the late Mary Smith of 8 Red Lion Yard, Hucknall. His father Stephen was born in 1838 in Hucknall and his mother Mary was also born in Hucknal in 1837, they were married C1872 and had three children William b1874, Herbert b1875 and Stephen b1878, all the children were born in Hucknall. His mother Mary Smith died in 1904 she was 66 yrs of age. In the 1911 census we find the family living at 8 Red Lion Yard Hucknall, and shown as Stephen 72 yrs a widow and army pensioner, he is living with his son Herbert 35 yrs a labourer at pit bank.

Military History

Pioneer Stephen Smith, enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 4th Labour Battalion Royal Engineers, he was killed by artillery fire at 10.30 a.m., 14th April 1916. He is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery.
