Family History

Arthur Leonard Willis was born in 1886 at Hyson Green and was the son of Fredrick Benjamin Willis a leather dresser and the late Sarah Frances Willis, of 10, Ashwell St., Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father Frederick Benjamin was born in 1851 at Sherwood Lodge, Nottingham, his mother Sarah Frances was born in 1852 she died in 1902 at Nottingham aged 50 yrs, they were married and had the following children, Ethel b1884, Arthur Leonard b1886, Alfred Pierre b1890, Albert Edward b1892 and Lionel b1894, all were born in Nottingham. Arthur Leonard married his wife Sarah Ann Geary in 1908 at Nottingham, they lived at 10 Ashwell Street, Hyson Green, they went on to have 2 children, William Arthur born 28th May 1909, he died on 15th September 1917 and Dora Anne born 14th June 1912. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Moseley Street, New Basford, Nottingham and are shown as Arthur Leonard Willis 28 yrs a brass bobbin winder, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 24 yrs and their son William Arthur 1 year of age. In the same 1911 census his father and siblings are living at 10 Ashwell Street, Hyson Green and are shown as Frederick Benjamin 60 yrs a leather dresser, he is living with is children, Ethel 27 yrs a working at home, Alfred Pierre 21 yrs a labourer, Albert 19 yrs a leather dresser and Lionel 17 yrs a brass finisher. His widow Sarah was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence which commenced on 17th April 1916. His wife later re married to become Sarah Ann Draper of 20 Thoresby Road, Mansfield Woodhouse,

Military History

Private Arthur Leonard Willis, enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he served with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment (formerly of the Sherwood Foresters). He died of wounds on 28th September 1915 and is buried in Merville Communal Cemetery, (grave ref IV.F.9).
